I have been hunting with a nickel finish CVA Optima .50 caliber since 2006, when it was given to me as an early Christmas present. Couldn’t have found a better rifle and use it year around here in north Texas. The 245 grain PowerBelt is a real brush buster! We definitely have a serious wild hog problem! I hunt on public land, due to not many people hunting on it and can hunt hogs all year. They are tearing the place up and the local farmers and forest rangers thank us for helping to lower their numbers and filling our freezers. What doesn’t go into my freezer, goes into the freezers of local low-income families. The hogs up here are active early in the morning and rest up until late afternoon before feeding again and going to their bedding areas. I’ve seen as many as 9 piglets for one sow, which have an incredible birth rate. I’ve taken several Whitetails under 200 yards with 120-130 grains of American Pioneer powder and 245 grain PowerBelts. The largest hog I’ve taken so far went nearly 250 pounds and dropped at 110 yards ( I have it zeroed to shoot 1″ high at 100 yards). I actually use it more than my Marlin 30-30. I also have the CVA 12 gauge barrel that changes out in less than a minute, giving me a gun for waterfowl and turkeys. I highly recommend the Optima, as well the other CVA models to anyone wanting to hunt with a muzzleloader. I believe that using a CVA muzzleloader makes a better marksman and a better hunter, having to make that shot count for a clean kill.
